Ragged Mountain, VA - 2010

I took this picture at Ragged Mountain Natural Area a couple of weeks ago. I was taking a nature photography class, and we went out to RMNA to take pictures on a Saturday morning. This is one of my favorite pictures from the morning of picture-taking. The sky wasn't really interesting to look at, but its reflection in the water was a deeper blue, so I decided to go for the reflections rather than the actual sky.

Blue Ridge Parkway, VA - 2010

I took this picture just off of the Blue Ridge Parkway over this past weekend. The trees are just starting to turn, but they haven't all turned yet, so it's still possible to find one red tree surrounded by the greens of summer. It was a beautiful day - temps in the 70s, sunshine - so it was a nice day to get pictures.

Near Charlottesville, VA - 2010

I took this picture late one night near where I live. I've been experimenting with night photography, so this was just one of a series of pictures I took trying to get the exposure right. I'm still working on it, but I really like this one.

Swallow Falls State Park, MD

I took this one on a road trip over the summer in Swallow Falls State Park in the corner of Maryland between Pennsylvania and West Virginia. It was a fine day for taking pictures of waterfalls, and this rainbow peeked out for a little bit while I was standing there - the angle of the sun was perfect.

Andover, MA - 2010

This was taken last week as I was headed home from work. I stopped to take pictures of the moon over one of the buildings nearby, and I realized that there was a lovely heat lightning show going on behind me. This is one of the cooler pictures from that collection. Given that I sat there for aboout 20 minutes, taking 1-second shutter clicks until the camera gasped in submission, you'd think I'd have gotten more pictures like this, but I can count the good ones on both hands. Now I know what must go into the REALLY cool lightning pictures I see online. Either that, or there are some people out there who are really good at Photoshop. :)

Charlottesville, VA - 2010

I took this one in Chris Greene State Park near Charlottesville. I had a hard time convincing my camera that yes, I really did want to take a picture that was this dark. I took some that were lighter, but they just didn't have the same colors as this one, so I kept the camera on the settings that produced this picture. Usually, I'm not a fan of orange and yellow, but I really like this picture.

Andover, MA - 2010

I took this one last week when there were thunderstorms going on south of us but not over our heads. I stood outside for about 20 minutes pressing the shutter every five seconds, and this was the only shot I got that was halfway decent. The colors are original although I changed the brightness of it in order to make the bolt of lightning in the middle a little more visible.

Shenandoah National Park - 2010

Waterfalls in Shenandoah National Park from a couple of weeks ago. Jen and I walked down to these falls and took some great pictures. Unfortunately, it was a weekend and it was pretty crowded, so I'd like to go back one of these days, but it was still worth the walk down there. Looking forward to going back.

Blue Ridge Mountains, VA - 2010

I took this picture a couple of weeks ago on my way out to the trails near my house. When I see butterflies around, I often stop to see if they'll land on something so I can take a picture of them, and I had just gotten myself a new zoom lens. This butterfly ended up on my shoe, and he was just too perfect there not to take pictures of him. I love his colors. He didn't stay long, unfortunately - I was only able to get this picture and one other before he took off.

Before and After #2

Again, I'm not going to say which one I fiddled with. Which one do you like better?

Before and After #1

These two pictures are the same picture, with some fiddling done to one of them (I'm not going to say which). Which one do you like better?

Blue Ridge Parkway, VA - 2009

I took this one just off of the Blue Ridge Parkway in the fall of 2009. The original picture is in color, but most of the tones were shades of gray anyway, so I turned it into black and white.

This was taken in a cemetary near the Parkway. I was taking pictures of the fall leaves near the gravestones when I heard these chimes in the wind. I was unable to resist taking a picture of them in the fog. It was fairly eerie.

This was originally a film picture, and the negative was converted to digital format.

Harold Parker State Forest, MA - July 2009

I took this picture in Harold Parker State Forest in Andover, MA. It's cropped a bit, but I haven't modified it in any other way. I liked the shape and color of these flowers although I must admit I don't know what they're called. As with other pictures, I like the contrast of the colors against each other.

Lake Umbagog, NH/ME - June 2007

This is one of my favorite camping pictures. It was taken in one of the remote campsites on Lake Umbagog in New Hampshire/Maine. It was a gorgeous morning, and we were looking forward to a good day of kayaking around the lake.

Monterey Bay, CA - 1997

One of my favorite pictures of all time. I call this one either "a pelican with illusions of grandeur" or "further proof that pelicans can't read." It's not a great photo artistically, but I took it from a moving boat at sunset with a point-and-shoot camera, so you can't expect much from it. I took this on a sunset cruise on Monterey Bay in September of 1997, right after I started graduate school there.

Near Charlottesville, VA II - 2010

I really like the colors in this photo, too. I particularly like the color of the sky here. The blue is so bright and such a contrast to the white of the flowers. When I took the picture, I actually wanted to capture the white of the flowers contrasted with the pink of the tiny buds below them. It's fascinating to me that these same pure white flowers came from deep pink buds only days earlier. I wasn't at all focused on the sky in this picture, but it is the one thing that makes the picture, for me.

Shenandoah Nat'l Park II - 2010

I may be the only person in the world who sees this, but to me, this looks like the two trees are kissing. The two parts where the trees meet are the mouths and noses, and each of the trees has a knot where the eyes should be.

I took this picture in Shenandoah National Park, near the Blackrock area. A friend recommended I park there and get out to take the mile-long round trip hike, and it was definitely worth it.

Near Charlottesville, VA - 2009

This is one of my favorite pictures of campus from last fall. I love the contrast of colors between the red of the leaves and the blue of the water and the green of the grass. I haven't done anything at all to the digital file, either, which is one of the cool things about it - the colors were all there naturally.

Shenandoah Nat'l Park - 2010

I took this picture last weekend in Shenandoah National Park. I'm not really sure what overlook I was standing in at the time, but I was looking southwest. I like a camera that handles taking pictures into the sun well, and I thought this tree looked sort of stark against the softness of the rest of the picture.

I took this with my Canon Rebel. I haven't made any changes to the digital file.

Cabin Lake, VA - 2010

I took this picture the other day while wandering around the campus that I now live on. The day was warm and spring-like, and I really liked the reflection of the cabin in the lake. The cabin isn't in the greatest shape, but it looks cool from a distance.

I took this with my new dSLR camera - a Canon Rebel. I've made no changes to the digital file.

Charlottesville, VA - 2009

I took this picture on the Rivanna Reservoir just outside of Charlottesville on the Sunday following Thanksgiving of 2009. There were a couple of herons on the reservoir, and I disturbed a couple of them as I was kayaking back to my put-in spot. This one decided to take temporary refuge in a tree over my head. I took many pictures of them, but this is the only one that looks halfway decent.
