Badlands Nat'l Park, SD - 1997

I took this picture on my first drive across the country, having stopped for the night in Badlands National Park in South Dakota. The Badlands, to me, are fascinating - these striped hills, cliffs, and crevices coming out of nowhere on an otherwise flat plain. I can just imagine what people thought of them when they first found them - after having walked across flatness for weeks if not months, the sight of these hills must have been a welcome visual relief to the boredom of a lot of grass.
I took this picture with a Kodak Advantix film camera, and the negative was converted to digital file by my local photo store. I have made no changes to the digital file.

Near Lost Hills, CA - 2009

I sat on a lonely road somewhere near Lost Hills, CA one evening on my May trip to Los Angeles from Santa Cruz. I had to drive for a while to find a place where there weren't many telephone and electrical wires between me and the sunset. I must have sat on this road for half an hour or so, and I can probably count on one hand how many cars passed me while I was sitting there. I was really bored for a while, but I got some very, very colorful pictures of the sunset. I thought at the time that it was unfortunate that the colors weren't reds and pinks, but I really like the yellows and oranges in this picture - they are very striking against the black of the rest of it.

I took this picture with Kodak film in a Canon AE1 35mm camera. I had the pictures converted to digital format by my local photo store. I have made no changes to the digital file.
