Rt. 1, California - 2009

Thanks for sticking with me while I went on a slight hiatus. I was at a conference in Denver for a week. :)

This was taken from a coastal access parking lot just off of Rt. 1 between Davenport and Pescadero, California. The parking lot is at the top of a cliff overlooking Greyhound Rock - you may see pictures of that at some later date. I've been to this place a few times at different times of the day for homework assignments for a photography class that I took recently, and I took pictures with my Canon AE-1 film camera as well as my digital camera. This one was taken in digital form.

I like the colors of this one, although I must admit I did some fiddling with the digital file to get the colors to the point where I remembered them in my brain.

I took this picture with my Kodak Z730 digital camera. As I said, I did make some significant changes to the colors in the picture, but I have not cropped it at all. I like it the way it is.

Pacific Grove, CA - 1997

This picture was taken in Pacific Grove, CA, near Monterey, in 1997 or 1998. I lived up the street from the bay in Pacific Grove and spent some time walking along the bike path near the water. I always enjoy taking pictures of water, especially when the waves are this high. It's a little weird to think that in 1997, I had absolutely no idea that I'd be back here living in Santa Cruz now.
This picture was probably taken with a Kodak APS camera, and the negative was converted to digital file by my local photo store. I haven't made any modifications to the file.

Forest of Nisene Marks, CA - 2009

Does anyone else think that this looks like the Sorting Hat from Harry Potter?

This picture was taken in the Forest of Nisene Marks state park in California a couple of months ago. Ken and I were walking through the forest, and I stopped to take a picture of an all-green tree (covered with moss, much like this fallen tree), and this caught my eye. The Sorting Hat was the first thing that came to my mind. I'm glad the picture came out as well as it did because there wasn't a whole lot of light!

I took this picture with a Canon AE-1 35mm camera with Kodak film, and the negative was digitized by my local photo store. I have cropped this picture significantly.

Rt. 1, California - 2008

I took this picture the day after Thanksgiving in 2008 when we were driving from Los Angeles to Santa Cruz on Rt. 1. In my book, there is nothing like a sunset over the Pacific from the coast. I especially like the contrast between the pastels of the sky and water and the black of the rocks.

I took this picture with my Kodak Z730 digital camera. I haven't made any changes to the file.

Yellowstone National Park - 1997

This picture is from Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. The water coming out of this spring has many minerals in it, and as it comes out of the ground, it creates these shelves with mineral deposits. I have no idea what the minerals are, but they are the source of these cool colors.

I took this picture with a Kodak APS camera and had the negative converted to a digital file by my local photo store. I haven't made any changes to the digital file.

Santa Barbara, CA - 2000

This is one of my all-time favorites. I took this picture in Santa Barbara on Thanksgiving day in 2000. I had just finished my final portfolio for my Master's degree, and I didn't have any family in the area, so I rented a car for the day and drove south on Rt. 1 from Monterey. I ended up in Santa Barbara just before sunset, so I parked in a parking lot on the beach and took a bunch of pictures as the sun set. This is one of my favorites.

I took this picture with a Kodak APS camera, and the negative was converted to digital file by my local photo store. I haven't modified the digital file in any way.

Mt. Washington, NH - 2007

This picture was taken from the summit of Mt. Washington in June 2007. Ken and I drove to the top (that's my car you can see) on our way north to Lake Umbagog from Massachusetts. The view was very hazy, as you can see, but I like this photo because of the car.
I took this picture with my Kodak Z730 digital camera. I haven't modified the digital file at all.

Samokov, Bulgaria - 1999

This church is located near the center of Samokov, Bulgaria. I walked by it every day when I was helping with the training for the Bulgaria 9 group, which came to Bulgaria the year after I did. I decided that I needed to take pictures of some of the frescoes on the outside of the church, but I never saw the churchyard open. I ended up taking pictures of the church through the walls that surrounded it; this iron grate served as one of the "windows" in the wall.
I took this picture with a Kodak APS camera and scanned the picture into the computer after my return from Bulgaria. Like other pictures from Bulgaria, I want to eventually convert the negatives directly to digital files because I suspect the colors will be better, but I haven't yet been able to do it. I have not made any modifications to the digital file.

North Andover, MA - 2001

This is the church in the Old Center of North Andover, MA. My dad commented once how he had seen the full moon behind the church, and how neat it would be to get a picture of it. In November 2001, I was living at home with my parents in North Andover and figured out (I forget how) that the full moon would be rising over the church, so I went and stood across the street and waited in the cold until it got dark and the moon rose. It's a beautiful old church, and seeing it with its spotlights with the full moon behind it is a rare treat.
I took this picture with my Kodak DC3700 digital camera. I also somewhere have pictures taken with a different camera - perhaps my Kodak APS? - but I can't find them. I think these came out better than the pictures I took with the other camera, if I remember correctly. The only modification I made to the file was to crop out the date stamp.

Powder Mill Pond, NH - 2007

Powder Mill Pond is in Hancock, NH. I have many pictures with this lovely orange kayak bow in them. I like to take pictures of the places I kayak, so the kayak does end up in a few of them. Sometimes they come out well and I think the kayak is a nice addition.
I've been kayaking on Powder Mill Pond several times. This trip was early in the season, and the pond was low. I didn't stay long because I have a little - well, a big - fear of being able to see the bottom of the pond. It sort of freaks me out, actually. But Powder Mill Pond is a great place to kayak at any time of the year. There's also a covered bridge near the boat launch area, which you may or may not see in a later picture.
This picture was taken with my Kodak Z730 digital camera. I haven't modified the digital file in any way.

Lillehammer, Norway - 2001

This was taken in a museum-type village in Lillehammer, Norway in June 2001. I spent a month traveling around Norway, Sweden, and Finland, and this was taken on my last stop, visiting my friend Egil in Gjøvik, Norway, which is just south of Lillehammer. We were able to drive north to Lillehammer one day, and we stopped to see this museum and walk around. It was a gorgeous day, and it was a really neat place to walk around.

I took this picture with a Kodak DC4300 digital camera. The only modification I made to the file was to crop out the date stamp in the bottom right-hand corner.

Lower Richardson Lake, ME - 2004

I took this picture on the last morning of a 5-day kayak trip with the Appalachian Mountain Club in July 2004. We woke up to fog and got on the water while we could still barely see our hands in front of our faces, but then the fog started to clear. I have several pictures from this morning because the fog was really neat to see as it was lifting.

I took this picture with a Kodak APS camera and had the film converted to digital file by my local photo store. I haven't made any modifications to the digital file.

Venice, FL - 2006

I took this on a beach in Venice, FL while I was staying at my aunt and uncle's condo about a half a mile away. I was staying in Venice while attending the TESOL conference in Tampa in March 2006. It's always a gamble taking pictures into the sun, but this one came out well. If I remember correctly, I stayed on the beach to watch the sunset after I took this. I don't think any of those pictures came out that well, though.
I took this with my Kodak EasyShare Z730. I have not made any modifications to the digital file.

Rila, Bulgaria - 1998

I took this picture right outside of the Rila Monastery in Bulgaria in August of 1998. The monastery is about 2 hours south of Sofia, and it's one of the most peaceful places I've ever been. I got a chance to go there twice - once while I was still a trainee, which was when I took this picture, and once about a year later, when I got a chance to stay overnight inside the monastery with some friends. This house is not part of the monastery, though.

This picture was taken with a regular ol' 35mm automatic camera and the picture was scanned into the computer. Someday I want to get the negative of this turned directly into a digital file, but that technology wasn't available at the time I wanted to make digital copies of all of my pictures from Bulgaria, and I have other pictures I'm working on first.

Cape Cod, MA - 1997

This picture was taken Memorial Day of 1997 on a drive through Cape Cod. I drove from north of Boston all the way to Provincetown and back in one day, and this was taken at one of the stops I made on the way back. It was still too early in the season for people to be out on the beach sunbathing and enjoying the water, but obviously a few people had been out walking.

This picture was taken with a Kodak APS camera and was converted to a digital file by my local photo store. I have not modified the file in any way.

Midwest America - 2008

I took this picture somewhere in the midwest - sorry, I don't remember where, but my guess would be somewhere in Nebraska or Wyoming - during my move from Massachusetts to California in August 2008. We'd been driving most of the day in alternating rain showers and sunny skies, and when we took a break to stretch our legs, we saw this little rain shower moving across the sky. I think that being able to see rain off in the distance is really cool.

This picture was taken with my Kodak EasyShare Z730 camera. I cropped the picture to get the little rain shower in the center - he's just so cute!

Gloucester, MA - 1997

This picture was taken in Gloucester, MA in the spring of 1997. I love this picture because of the shadows of the land and house. I don't know where exactly in Gloucester it is - I was just down there for the day taking pictures. I knew I was headed into the Peace Corps, and I wanted to take pictures of as many places as possible in order to show the people in whatever country I ended up in. On this particular day, I had decided to take a drive down to Gloucester and Rockport, but the weather wasn't particularly cooperative, so I didn't get a lot of good pictures.

This picture was taken with a Kodak APS camera and converted to digital file by my local photo store. I have not modified the file in any way.

Walden Pond, Maine - 2004

This photo was taken in Maine in the summer of 2004. It was taken from the backyard of the house I was staying in at the time, in Sebago, ME. The name of the pond is actually Walden Pond, but it's not the same Walden Pond that we know and love in Massachusetts (I have pictures of that pond, too). I like taking pictures of the sun reflected in the water. They don't always come out well, but I think this one did. I particularly like the colors of this one.

This picture was taken with a Kodak APS camera and converted to a digital file by my local photo store. I have not modified the digital file in any way.

Yosemite National Park - 1998

This picture is from a trip to Yosemite National Park in May 1998, the first national park we visited on my second drive across the country. I was near the foot of a waterfall, and this is the stream that rushed down from the waterfall, a little ways away. I've always liked taking pictures of water - it's always different, always changing. In this picture, I like the contrast of the dark trees against the white of the water. I have another picture of this same stream, but the trees aren't as dark, so I just don't like it as much as I like this one.

This picture was taken with a Kodak APS camera and converted to digital file at my local photo shop. The file has not been modified in any way. I don't generally believe in modifying digital pictures, although I will do it on occasion, usually just to crop. I either like a picture or I don't - the ones I don't like are usually ones that won't be made any better by making superficial changes to them.

Start of a Photoblog

I've finally broken down and made a photoblog. I just have way too many pictures, and lacking the wall space to put them all up on my wall, I've decided I just need to get them out of my system in another way.

The pictures I'll be posting - at least over the next few weeks - are mostly my favorite landscape pictures from my travels. I've been in 39 states and a whole bunch of European countries, so I've got a pretty varied collection.

So the only thing I ask is that you remember that my photos are all copyright by me. Please do not copy them to your hard drive or use them in any way without my permission. Thanks!
